Mattresses, Sleep & Your Health
Sleep Training
The amount of sleep that one needs in order to feel good about life and function at their peak is different for everyone and varies according to sex and age group. One thing is certain though:
-
If you do not get enough quality sleep, you will experience severe and immediate consequences.
-
Understanding the necessity of quality sleep and how to achieve it will give our sales staff a critical edge over the typical retail store.
-
Helping our customers to have the best sleep of their life on a well-built, healthy mattress is our goal.
Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation can cause a decrease in performance and alertness by up to 30% from just one night with 1½ hours less sleep. Memory and cognitive ability also suffer. Studies show that 80% of Americans report negative professional side effects from poor sleep. Getting only five hours of sleep per night for a week causes impairment equivalent to being legally drunk and more than 40% of sleep deprived workers say they suffer from depression- like symptoms and irritability.
Common Sleep Disorders
The following are some common sleep disorders and their definition. Insomnia is when you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Insomnia can be brought on by depression, stress, anxiety or medication and is more common in women than men. Narcolepsy is when you suffer from extreme sleepiness or are unable to stay awake while performing normal daytime functions. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when the tissue in the back of the throat collapses or when the tongue falls back and restricts the airway causing sleep disturbances due to lack of oxygen.
The Right Mattress
Having a supportive, comfortable mattress set is critical for achieving quality sleep. However, most Americans give little thought to how their mattress is affecting their sleep. In one survey, 66% of respondents said they were not likely to investigate the quality of their current mattress or consider purchasing a new one. With over a third of our life spent in bed, our mattress should not be an afterthought. Almost 50% of Americans keep their mattress longer than they should. It is possible to get used to a bed long after it has stopped providing adequate support and comfort.
Sleep Facts
Children need lots of sleep in order to avoid development and behavior problems. Infants need about 14-15 hours a day, toddlers need about 12-14, preschoolers need 11-13, and school age children need 10-11 hours of sleep a day. Signs that your child may have a sleep problem include: bed wetting, snoring, waking repeatedly, needing lots of help to fall asleep, bad behavior or mood, and struggling in school.
Bed Usage
As mentioned earlier, making lifestyle changes to improve your sleep hygiene will have the most beneficial, long-term affects on your sleep. Your bed should be used for only three things: sleep, sex, and sickness. Your bedroom needs to be viewed as a sleep sanctuary, not a place to work or play. The next step is to change your sleep/night time routine.
