Common Mattress Myths
Ten Things the Big Mattress Companies Don't Want You to Know!
1. Commissioned Salespeople. Most salespeople at the big mattress stores and department stores work on commission. The more expensive a mattress they sell, the more they earn. At Custom Comfort Mattress, our Comfort Consultants do not receive a commission; and thus, they help you choose the mattress that is right for you and not for them. In fact, many of our current staff began their careers with us working in our factory or as delivery drivers, where they learned about mattresses from the inside out.
2. "No-Flip" is a Big Flop. There's been a lot of hype about the "no-flip" or one-sided mattress. We believe it should be called the "can't flip" mattress. Mattress companies like this concept because they can manufacture a model for less and sell it for the same price or more than a traditional two-sided mattress. The simple truth is: two sides will last longer than one. There's nothing wrong with selling one-sided mattresses, as long as customers are informed about what they are getting. At Custom Comfort Mattress, we inform you about the benefits of each mattress, and we won't try to confuse you by selling a cost-saving tactic as a benefit.
3. Trade-Ins. We believe it's misleading to tell the public that their old mattress is valuable as a "trade-in" and will earn a discount off the price of a new mattress. This is just a deceiving way to say they will remove your old mattress when they deliver the new one, a practice which is provided at no charge by most mattress stores. Additionally, U.S. law forbids used mattresses from being resold or reconditioned for resale by retail stores. Bottom line: your old mattress has absolutely no trade-in value.
4. Discounts Aren't Always Good Deals. At many stores, the "discounted" or "sale" price of a mattress is actually the everyday price. Sales and advertised discounts are often times just a way to get you into the store and make you feel that you're getting a good deal. At Custom Comfort, there are no misleading markups and markdowns. Our mattresses feature the same factory-direct price every day of the week.
5. Misleading Claims. The claim to beat another store's advertised price is an empty promise. Why? Private labeling: manufacturers give the same mattress model several different names. At one store it's known by one name and at the next store by something else. This is done intentionally, making it nearly impossible for customers to comparison shop. Quite a trick!
6. Where's the Cotton? Most manufacturers have substituted the comfort and durability of genuine cotton padding to save costs by using polyfoam, which is much less expensive and breaks down much faster. A mattress using polyfoam is okay as long as it doesn't come with a four-figure price tag and a misleading 20 year warranty. Ask to see what's on the inside of your mattress before you buy.
7. Buttons Hold More than Shirts Together. Button tufting has become a lost art. Like the stitching on a quilt, button tufting is what keeps the materials from shifting around in a quality mattress. Yet, most mattress manufacturers don't even own a button-tufting machine these days. If you're investing $1000 or more in a mattress that you expect to keep for at least ten years, we believe it should be button-tufted.
8. Very Few Things Are Free. Free financing. Free delivery. Free frame. Free pillows. Free sheets. "Free" is a magic word in advertising. That's why you see it used so often. The truth is that all of these "free" items are built into the price you are paying.
9. High Price May Not Equal High Value. It's a familiar phrase. You don't always get what you pay for. In the world of mattress shopping, it can be very true. In the same way that "sale" prices are used to make people feel they're getting a good deal, extraordinarily high prices are employed to connote luxury and comfort without necessarily having the high quality. Proper mattress shopping education can simplify your decision, whether you want to spend a few hundred dollars or a few thousand dollars on your next mattress set.
10. Back to Basics. No single type of mattress is best for your back. Mattress names such as "Back Care" or use of words such as "pedic" and "ortho" can mislead you to believe a particular mattress has some special orthopedic qualities. Our Comfort Consultants are equipped to help you seek the best mattress for you based on your needs and preferences. It is also recommended that you relax and spend 10-15 minutes on each mattress in order to truly get a feel of it. Furthermore, trying fewer mattresses will help you avoid the typical mattress-shopping confusion.
